what this is
this is a long-running, non-commercial research project to study the internet. it involves collecting and measuring aggregate statistics about how the internet is used, and how that changes over time.
- i do not log in, authenticate, extract or brute-force any credentials, and do not exploit vulnerabilities, disrupt, or attempt to gain access to any system.
- this does not send queries to, read, download, or alter any data stored on your service. all scanning consists of observing only what a service publicly announces on an open port.
what this does
this scanner sends a single connection request (a TCP SYN) to a small, fixed set of ports, and, where a service answers, reads only the banner it voluntarily returns (such as a software name and version) along with optionally reading public metadata about the service.
how the data is used
data collected is used to generate aggregate statistics on the world wide web.
privacy
this page serves as the privacy notice for the project. ip addresses can be personal data under the GDPR, and they are processed here on the basis of legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)): non-commercial security-measurement research conducted in a minimal, non-intrusive way, with a standing opt-out.

responsible use
if you run a scanned service and reached this page, it likely means your service is reachable from the public internet. that is worth reviewing regardless of this project. consider firewalling the port, enabling authentication, or binding the service to a private interface.
